The AOL French stack is a set of vocabulary flashcards I designed to be used with my Elementary French course this winter on AOL. (Still plenty of time to sign up! Course starts this February and meets for two hours on Tuesday nights.) The stack is designed to import French/English vocabulary from text files. The stack is to be used as flashcards would be - French word on one side, English translation on the other.
I. To import vocabulary
1. In the 'Flashcards' menu, choose 'Import Vocab'
2. Navigate to the file to be imported and select 'Open'
II. To use
1. At least one item MUST be chosen from the 'Categories' menu in order for the stack to function. (The 'Categories' menu is created when a text file is imported.) Each item in the 'Categories' menu corresponds to an imported text file. Choose the vocabulary file or files you wish to test yourself on. Choices will be check marked in the menu. Use Forward and Backward arrows to navigate the chosen cards. The Question mark button chooses randomly from the active categories. Holding down the option key while pressing the forward or backward arrows or the question mark will temporarily activate ALL the cards.
In the lower right corner press the 'F' or 'E' to alternate between French and English.
III. Text file format
You can make up your own text files to be imported. I'll use the following example to explain :
Irregular verbs
venir,to come
devoir,to have to
croire,to believe
mettre,to put / to place
The first line of the document (Irregular verbs I) is the name of the file as you would like it to appear in the 'Categories' menu. End the line by pressing the <return> key .
From the second line on, you enter first the French word followed by a comma, then the English translation. Press <return> at the end of each line and be sure to save the document as a text file. Be sure there are no extra lines at the end of your file! (I've included a few hastily put together samples for you to examine and play with as you wish.) You're ready to import!
Have fun!
IV. All cards may be deleted by choosing 'Erase All' from the 'Flashcards' menu.
V. For best results, you should have 36 point Geneva available.
